So how many teaspoons in a tablespoon? I’ve always been good at cooking but baking has taken a lot of practice and math conversion. Baking is a precise science and it has taken me some time to learn some important concepts that come in handy in the kitchen. So, I’d like to share some of the learnings around measurements here with you.
1 tablespoon is exactly 3 teaspoons.
I’ve googled this question many times while in the middle of baking, and yet I’ve managed to forget many times. But, now I’ve memorized it and posted it in my baking drawer (just in case I forget). Remembering this one measurement has certainly made my baking life a lot easier and results are much more in line with the expectations. Go figure!
Some Handy Kitchen Conversions
There is a difference between liquid and dry ingredients. For liquid ingredients, it is best to use a measuring cup that is specifically for liquids and is usually made of glass, like this one here. I don’t recommend plastic ones, as you might be working with hot liquids that can melt plastic
See below for common conversions for both dry and wet ingredients.
- 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons
- 2 tablespoons = 1 ounce
- 4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup
- 5 1/3 tablespoons = 1/3 cup
- 8 tablespoons = 1/2 cup
- 12 tablespoons = 3/4 cup
- 14 tablespoons = 1 cup
As mentioned above, it is advisable to use a measuring cup specifically made for liquids, as it is different than dry ingredients measuring cup. I recommend this one here as it is a classic and is used by most home bakers. Below are conversions using a liquid measuring cup:
